WANA (Feb 27) – The foreign ministers of Iran and Malaysia held discussions on various aspects of bilateral and multilateral cooperation during the 8th Joint High Commission Meeting between the two nations in Tehran.

The meeting, co-chaired by Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and his Malaysian counterpart Mohammad Hassan, focused on enhancing relations in economic, trade, scientific, cultural, and technological fields, as well as expanding collaboration in regional and international organizations.

Iran Committed to Strengthening Ties with Malaysia

Araghchi emphasized Iran’s strategic focus on expanding relations with Asian, developing, and Muslim-majority nations. He highlighted Malaysia’s key role in Asia and the Islamic world and congratulated the country on its chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). He also welcomed Malaysia’s recent membership in BRICS, stressing the potential of the bloc to boost bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

Acknowledging Malaysia’s strong stance in support of Palestinian rights, Araghchi praised its government and people for their principled position during what he called 16 months of Israeli “genocide and war crimes” in Gaza. He pointed to the upcoming OIC foreign ministers’ meeting in Jeddah as an opportunity for Islamic nations to take a unified stance in support of Palestine and against the “forced displacement” of Palestinians.

Malaysia Values Iran’s Role in Regional Affairs

Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohammad Hassan described his visit to Tehran as significant and productive. He reiterated Malaysia’s recognition of Iran as a key player in West Asia with a rich historical and civilizational legacy, affirming that Iran holds a special place in Malaysia’s foreign policy.

He expressed gratitude for Iran’s support of Malaysia’s BRICS membership bid and underscored the importance of strengthening people-to-people ties, particularly among business and trade sectors. Hassan also reaffirmed Malaysia’s steadfast support for Palestine and called for greater cooperation among Islamic nations to counter Israeli “aggression and crimes.”

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides signed the official minutes of the 8th Iran-Malaysia Joint High Commission and expressed optimism that continued consultations would help map out a comprehensive strategy for deepening cooperation at regional and international levels.

Later, Araghchi shared a summary of his discussions with Mohammad Hassan on Instagram, highlighting the 60-year history of Iran-Malaysia relations and both nations’ commitment to furthering ties based on mutual respect and shared interests.
